Duncan Smith, MLS
Chief Strategist for Public Libraries
Duncan Smith is Chief Strategist for Public Libraries and the Founder of the NoveList Division of EBSCO Information Services. As a new librarian, he struggled with the fact that readers’ advisory services were only as good as the individual librarian’s memory and ability to read a wide range of genres. He thought there should be a database that would be a “secret weapon” for keeping track of all the great books to recommend. That “secret weapon”, NoveList, was created in 1991 and was an immediate hit with librarians. NoveList was purchased by EBSCO in 1999.
Since creating NoveList, Mr. Smith has worked to help librarians transform the lives of the readers in their communities by leading a team that creates the tools and resources library staff use to provide their most important service—connecting readers with the books that will make a difference in their lives.
Mr. Smith has a Masters of Library Science from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science.
